Music can be analysed by considering a variety of its elements, or parts, individually or together. A commonly used list of the main elements includes pitch, timbre, texture, volume, duration and form. The elements of music may be compared to the elements of art or design. It becomes part of the play and works to tell a complete story. Yet song has another function within musicals, it can maintain interest and popularity of a show long after it is over. It can also stimulate sales and the success of a show. The six elements, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, form, timbre and texture, are universally considered to be the fundamental systems that underpin all music. Playing music and singing with others is one of the most powerful ways of learning about oneself, working with others, problem-solving and being a part of a team.
