Here are the things that can happen when a plants root system is injured or damaged:
- The root system can recover.
- It can kill the plant.
A plant’s reaction after an injury will depend on the following factors:
- The type of plant
- The level of injury
- The type of disease
- The substrate and location
Explanation:
For those who have done any type of gardening, it is common knowledge that different things work for different plants. The plants around us are just like the animals in which some are strong and resilient, while others require specific conditions to thrive. One example of this is the Ficus Septica which is known in the Philippines as the Hauli tree. It grows all over the tropical lowlands of this country. It is spread by bats and birds. This plant can grow anywhere the bat leaves its droppings and is very hard to kill once the root system is well established. Chopping its trunk and any visible root you can dig will only slow down or a few days since it will eventually recover and grow new stems and leaves and proceed with its speedy growth rate. Another example of a plant that recovers quickly is the Bougainvillea, like the Hauli tree, the only way to kill it is to pull out the entire root system since any injured root will just recover. Both plants seem to be resistant to many diseases that attack the roots.
If there are strong plants, there re those that weaken or die when the roots are injured. Many desert cacti do not tolerate standing water, these plants originate from areas of the world where rain is rare. The substrate would have to be loose (equal portions of sand and soil) to allow excess water to flow away from the roots. Even without an injured root, it will surely rot from the bottom if it stays wet for too long.
