We have an atmosphere, a layer of gases, that protects us from damage from the things outside of the earth like UV radiation from the sun and sometimes even heavenly bodies like comets and asteroids. Our atmosphere contains oxygen, a gas that is crucial for the survival of the creatures within our planet. Autotrophs (like plants) need oxygen in order to initiate photosynthesis to make food. Human beings also need it to respirate.
