In a literary work, I will choose Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.
William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” is another play that has issues to do with discrimination and prejudice deeply embedded in its plot line. Here are my analysis in the story:
1. Family Feud: Montagues and Capulets are two noble families in a town called Verena that has a bitter history of rivalry. This results in a rivalry between the two families which is characterized by discrimination as well as prejudice and violence in the play.
2. Social Class: It also addresses prejudice and discrimination as a theme—the stratification of society based on the social class. Their love becomes prejudice by the communities of Verona because it breaks the barrier of their class exploitation where Romeo and Juliet are from two different classes.
3. Racial Prejudice: The issue of there being prejudice based on the color of one’s skin is not directly addressed systemically in the play. The people of Verona may have felt superior to someone from another town, or didn’t approve of it, and that could’ve been seen in their actions towards each other.
4. Gender Roles: Patriarchal standards being reflected in the play are best depicted in gender roles that were expectations placed on an upcoming young woman namely Juliet. She has to go by the rules of the society and this means that her marriage decision has to be dictated by her family, demonstrating the unfair treatment of women in the society.
5. Individual vs. Society: The conflict between passion and the demand of society as a whole is also reflected in the theme of discrimination and prejudice. For lovers like Romeo and Juliet, they experience social injustice or prejudice right from youth when they wish to follow their own intentions rather than doing what the society expects of them.
In conclusion, the analysis of the themes discrimination and prejudice identified in the play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ presented an insight into how discrimination and prejudice affected members of that society and how it continued to influence their conduct in the play.
