The
Philippines belongs to the Pacific Ring of Fire. There are thirty-seven (37)
volcanoes in the Philippines, of which eighteen (18) are active volcanoes.
Active volcanoes mean that an eruption occurred in the past years and a new
eruption can be expected in the future. Mt. Mayon is the most active volcano in
the Philippines. It had forty-seven (47) eruptions since 1616 up until
2002. As a result of this 1,300 people died and thousands more were left
homeless. The volcano’s most recent eruptions were in 1947, 1984, and 1993. In
1993 sixty-eight (68) people were killed and sixty thousand (60,000) were
evacuated from the vicinity.
