A tortoise has a generally amazing way of
adapting to its environment. An average tortoise weighs 8-15 lbs., 9-15 inches
long, and 4-6 inches in height. They have a life span of 80-100 years.
It survives in hot temperatures by burrowing its
way into the ground where it is cooler. They use their strong and muscular
forelimbs to do this and they spend 95% of their lifetime underneath the ground
escaping heat. These animals hibernate (sleep) from November up to February or
March and they usually come out of the ground just after it has rained.
