Both Mina and Dahyun arguing in the cafeteria. Mina says it would have a stronger inertia if she flings the Jell-O at a higher speed. Dahyun argues that inertia is not dependent on speed but rather on mass. Who do you agree with? Explain

Sagot :

I agree with Dahyun.

Explanation:

By definition, inertia looks on the level of resistance of an object to change in velocity. It is determined on how it is able to resist the change that an external force is attempting to create.

If an object is able to resist it completely, then it has a larger inertia. If it is not, then a smaller inertia. And the only way that the object, like the jell-o, will be able to limit the tendency of being changed is through its mass.

For instance, when the jell-o is heavy enough that it could not be able to be flung easily, then it has a large inertia because it cannot be even moved instantly. If it is lighter, then you can even fling it without any much effort and can even change its direction while it is on mid-air.

Speed does not make sense. It is even affected by mass also; the heavier the jell-o, the slower it can travel mid-air. Even on how quick it travels in air, if there is a large external force than can be able to redirect its trajectory, it will still be moved easily.

Therefore, Dahyun is right and Mina does not make sense. Mass is the only challenge that an external force will deal with upon testing the inertia of an object.
