Equation:
x - 8 = 2 (50 - x)
x - 8 = 100 - 2x
x + 2x = 100 + 8
3x = 108
3x/3 = 108/3
x = 36

Present ages:
Patrick's: x = 36 years old
Mako's: 58 - x = 58 - 36 = 22 years old

Answer:  Mako is 22 years old.

Check:

Ages Eight years ago:
