Makato is the main character in the story of “Makato and the Cowrie Shell”. He was an orphan for his parents died when he was very young. He also had no relatives and friends to take care of him so he had to work for himself. As a worker, he is always praised by his employer as a sensible, hardworking, good-tempered, and a cheerful one. From the story the following characteristics were also shown by Makato:

Determined

Clever

Intelligent and Industrious

Tall and Handsome

Loyal

Honest – He never idled his work although he was paid only a small wage. As he saw the little cowrie lying on the ground, he immediately ran to pick it up and held it out to the king.  

Determined – He never stopped on his journey to reach the land he wished to go, the Kingdom Sukhothai.

Clever – Makato wisely thought of a way to have as much as many lettuce seeds he can buy from his cowrie shell.

Intelligent and Industrious – The king was impressed with Makato after presenting him the biggest bunches of lettuce that he was able to grew from the cowrie shell the king gave him.  

Tall and Handsome – He came out to be tall and handsome as the years passed.

Loyal – He was so loyal to the king that the king trusted him absolutely.
