The first crusade(1096-1099) was an attempt to recapture Jerusalem. There were true Christians who wanted to reclaim Jerusalem for their belief that the Muslims should get out of the city. Those who volunteered to fight thought their sins would be forgiven. And if they were killed they would automatically be sent to Heaven. Before the capture of Jerusalem, the Crusaders had successes in battles like Nicea and Antioch. Jerusalem was attacked at 1099. After their victory, the Kingdom of Jerusalem was ceated and its first king was Godfrey of Bouillon who was elected by other crusaders.
