The reasons why did he travel to this place?

  1. Odin has always wanted to be the wisest in the world.
  2. He did not understand why Mimer had to hold all the knowledge.

Wisdom is so admired that the story even illustrates its importance while describing the animals that live on the Yggdrasil tree.

The two ravens named Memories and Thought were said to be the wisest of birds. Next to them is the Eagle and followed by the three maidens who possess knowledge of the past, present, and the future.

So in order to have what he desired the most, Odin had to pluck out one of his eyes in exchange for a drink from Mimer’s well of wisdom which he obtained in the end.

Wisdom is admired and condemned by the gods because it can be used both for good and evil acts as in the case of the giants against the Gods and vice versa.
