Answer:
What do you call this molten material?
The molten material is called magma, which is found beneath the earth’s crust. It is basically made of molten rocks and some trapped gas bubbles.
Explanation:
Based on the composition, it has been agreed that there are 3 general types of magma:
- Basaltic
- Rhyolitic
- Andesitic
The differences mainly stem from the various levels of iron (Fe), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), and sodium (Sodium) found in each of the 3 types.
The differences between them:
- Basaltic magma contains more Mg, Fe, Ca but is low in K, Na.
- Rhyolitic magma has more K, Na and is low on Ca, Mg and Fe.
- Andesitic magma lies between the previous 2 types in terms of the level of elements found in samples.
Each type can also be distinguished by determining the amount of the compound Silicon dioxide (SiO2). The type with a higher level is more viscous.
Levels:
- Rhyolitic - high viscosity.
- Andesitic - medium viscosity.
- Basaltic - low viscosity
Here are some examples of SiO2 that most are familiar with:
- Sand - silica sand are the ones that have tiny shiny bits of natural glass that are usually purchased by truckloads to be mixed in with cement. It does not include the white sand found in tropical paradise type beaches which is mostly composed of calcium carbonate or coral sand.
- Quartz - is the second most common mineral on Earth, it is found mixed in rocks everywhere.
- Crystalline silica - commonly used in concrete.
- Silica - is a compound we unknowingly use daily, it is in our toothpaste which works as an abrasive element, and we commonly see them packed inside our brand new pair of shoes, pills, and others. They are packed looking like tiny pillows with the “DO NOT EAT” sign printed on all sides.
