We let the width be x, this would make the length x+8. So:
Area = length*width
0.5 = (x+8)x
0.5 = x²+8x
0 = x²+8x-0.5
0 = 2x²+16x-1

We do the quadratic formula:
x = -16 ± √(16²+8) = -16 ± √(256+8) = -16 ± √264 = -16 ± 2√66 = -4 ± √66
