  4. Encourages education and good work-ethics for the good.

  • It is difficult to measure how these points have benefited China. It is assumed that there were several 'good' emperors who sincerely followed these values that enriched the lives of their people. As late as 1922, Bertrand Russel praised the Chinese as possessing an outstanding degree of etiquette and reverence for each other. Other countries that have followed Confucian values, such as Japan and Singapore, have enjoyed great economic prosperity and are world-renowned for their social etiquette. Indeed, China's economic growth was often due to the remnant of the hard-working ethos of Confucianism. Family relations are still very good, too. But China's Communist and Capitalist experiments have weakened much of the influence of Confucianism, especially the virtuous component of morality (which is probably the most important aspect). This failure may also show the value of Confucianism, as the Chinese government is beginning to look again at Confucian values to help address various moral issues within China.

Negative:

  1. People's individuality is silenced into obedience  
  2. Promotes inequality as a positive thing  
  3. Confucianism is so confident that the people it offers authority not to take advantage of the situation  
  4. By promoting inequality and establishing a one-sided power structure that is not free from corruption, we are guided to:

  • Chastisement of outsiders and minorities as 'barbarians' (nationalism)  
  • Oppression against women (patriarchy)

  • One of the reasons Mao vowed to destroy Confucianism is that he characterized Confucianism as above. Indeed, Confucianism, as practiced in fact, is guilty of all of these charges. Its conservatism idealizes the different cultural patterns that contribute to things like a common preference for boys. This conservatism often undermines anything outside of patterns, because topics like LGBT have a difficult time. Overall, this has lead to a 'conformity by shame' approach-I found that because it's too humiliating for a child to deny the parent's authority, many children end up making poor choices about life because they did everything their parents wanted them to do (they're not always good parents either). It should be remembered, though, that modern political theorists who support Confucianism are seeking to adapt the philosophy to make all these issues better-I think there is still hope for Confucianism in Chinese culture, and considering its disadvantages, it has some undeniable advantages.
