COVID-19 vs. Influenza
Influenza and COVID-19 are both infectious respiratory illnesses.
Although
the symptoms of COVID-
19 and flu can look similar, the two illnesses
are caused by
different viruses.
Both influenza and COVID-19 may bring fever, cough, body aches and
fatigue; sometimes vomiting and diarrhea. They can also lead to pneumonia.
They can be spread from person to person through droplets in the air from an
infected person coughing, sneezing or talking. Severe cases of influenza and
COVID 19 may require hospitalization and respiratory support machine such as
mechanical ventilation.
However, COVID-19 is caused by novel 2019 coronavirus, now called
severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus. No vaccine is available at this
time, though development and testing is in progress. There have been
approximately 494,841 deaths reported worldwide as June 2020.
Influenza, on the other hand, is caused by any of several different types
and strains of influenza viruses. A vaccine is already available and is proven
effective to prevent some of the most dangerous types to reduce the severity of
the flu. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 290,000 to 650,000
people die of flu-related causes every year worldwide.
